MP assessment in wastewater treatment plant – occurrence, removal, and fate
Postgraduate
At NTNU, ESR11 will investigate toxic effects of plastic particles incubated in wastewater on Daphnia magna.
At EVONIK, ESR11 will test a new methodology for separating microplastics from sludge matrix.
Beneficiary
1st Supervisor
2nd Supervisors
Objectives:
The aim of ESR11’s project is to investigate the occurrence, the removal, and the fate of MP in wastewater when applying different technologies for wastewater treatment. Conventional treatment processes will be studied to provide baseline data on the removal of MP during wastewater treatment. In addition, advanced tertiary treatment technologies will be compared to identify processes increasing the MP removal. Sludge contamination will be analysed because it is often used as fertiliser in agriculture. MP concentration in different types of sludge will be analysed using harmonised methods. The MP load in combined sewer overflows will be also examined.
